Are We Ready for Our Final Destination?
Life on Earth as a Layover Toward Eternity

Life looks a lot like a busy airport: arrivals, departures, hurrying travelers, eyes scanning departure boards. And yet, in all this motion, how many of us think about our most important flight — the one with no return?
This World Is a Layover, Not the Destination
Allah, the Most High, tells us clearly: this earthly life is a passage. It has value — the value of preparing for eternity — but it is not the final stop.
"Every soul will taste death. And you will only be given your full reward on the Day of Resurrection. And the life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion." > — Surah Al-Imran (3:185)
The Arabic word ad-dunya literally means "the nearest" — it is only the waiting room. The real life, the one that never ends, is al-ākhira.
The Prophet ﷺ captured it perfectly: "Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler passing through." (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
A traveler passing through doesn't unpack forever. He stays aware of his next departure.
The Departures Board: Births and Deaths
In every airport, two large boards dominate the hall: DEPARTURES and ARRIVALS. Names appear, flights take off, others land. It is a ceaseless movement, a dance that never stops.
Human life resembles this board in a striking way. Every birth is an arrival into this world. Every death is a departure toward eternity. Allah taught us:
"Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." > — Surah Al-Baqara (2:156)
The loved ones who come into the world, those who leave us — it is all departures and arrivals on life's board. And our own flight draws closer with every passing moment.
Packing the Right Spiritual Luggage
Who would board a long journey without a passport, without luggage, without a confirmed ticket? Nobody. And yet, how many of us go through life without seriously preparing for the journey that matters most?
Allah addresses us directly:
"O you who believe! Fear Allah, and let every soul consider what it has sent forth for tomorrow." > — Surah Al-Hashr (59:18)
The believer's luggage is well-defined: Faith (al-Imān) — the passport without which no door opens; good deeds — the main luggage that every sincere act fills; the Quran and Sunnah — the map and GPS of the journey; Salah and Dhikr — the constant connection with Allah; Sadaqah — an insurance that protects in this life and the next; and Tawbah — a ticket that can always be corrected, as long as time remains.
The Careless Traveler and the Wise Traveler
Two travelers at the same airport. The first arrives late, bags unpacked, distracted by shops, no boarding pass confirmed. The second is calm: documents in order, luggage checked, ready to board with dignity.
These are two ways of living a life.
The Prophet ﷺ warned us: "Take advantage of five things before five others: your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your preoccupations, and your life before your death." (Sahih Al-Albani)
Time is the traveler's most precious resource. Every hour that passes brings the final boarding closer.
The Dream Destination: Al-Jannah
And what a destination. No travel catalog in the world can come close to what Allah has prepared for those who love Him:
"I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever imagined." > — Hadith Qudsi | Sahih Al-Bukhari & Muslim
This journey is unlike any other. No delays, no lost luggage, no unpleasant surprises upon arrival. Only this magnificent promise: "Peace be upon you, you have done well — enter it to abide eternally." — Surah Az-Zumar (39:73)
Are You Ready for Your Flight?
The question is not whether we will leave — for every soul will taste death. The real question is: will we leave prepared?
Today, right now, at this very moment — your connecting flight is running. Check your luggage. Confirm your itinerary. And ask Allah to grant you the best of destinations.
"Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire." — Al-Baqara: 201
